- Facilities Technician: Part-time, Hourly, Non-Exempt

Position: Facilities Technician
Classification: Part-Time, Hourly, Non-Exempt
Reports to: Shelter Manager
General Summary:
The Facilities Technician helps maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for families experiencing homelessness. This role combines light janitorial duties, basic maintenance and repair work, and some outdoor upkeep.
Essential Job Functions:
Daily Cleaning & Upkeep
- Sweep and mop floors
- Empty trash and replace liners throughout the facility
- Clean shared spaces including bathrooms, kitchen, and other communal areas
- Clean and sanitize high-touch surfaces
Deep Cleaning
- Clean appliances such as refrigerators and stove
- Address buildup in corners, baseboards, and less frequently cleaned areas
- Assist with room turnover cleaning as needed
Basic Maintenance & Repairs
- Fix minor plumbing issues (e.g., running toilets, dripping faucets)
- Replace lightbulbs and fixtures as needed
- Change doorknobs, tighten hardware, and perform minor repairs
- Identify and report larger maintenance concerns
Grounds & Outdoor Work
- Assist with lawn mowing, weed trimming, and general exterior upkeep (seasonal)
- Help maintain a clean and safe outdoor environment
Other
- Communicate relevant information regarding work assignments and maintain routine records
- Perform other duties as needed and assigned by the Shelter Manager and/or Executive Director
Skills:
- Experience in maintenance, facilities, custodial, or related work preferred
- Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, and general repair tasks
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively during short shifts
- Reliable and consistent attendance is essential
- Must be respectful, professional, and comfortable working in a family shelter environment
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED preferred
- 1-2 years relevant experience preferred
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and reach for extended periods
- Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds occasionally
- Ability to frequently navigate stairs and move between multiple levels of the shelter and office buildings, including basement, main floor, and second floor
- Ability to safely transport supplies and equipment between buildings and levels as needed
Additional Requirements
- Pass criminal background check
- Valid Michigan Driver’s License
Schedule & Coverage
- Approximately 3-hour shifts
- Daily coverage required, including weekends (shared between two staff)
- Flexible scheduling with coordination between team members
